3 Peaks Challenge – The Training Begins

Every January, a majority of the nation hit the gym in pursuit of the ripped bod seen in magazines. Despite trying, that’s never really happened for me – usually because I focus on the wrong things when trying to get slimmer.

In the past couple of weeks, I’ve been reassessing the way I approach health, fitness and my body image. After some inspiration from Insta and YouTube fitness gurus, I decided that the best way to motivate me in the gym would be to have something to work towards that wasn’t quantitive.

My goal for fitness this year? The National 3 Peaks Challenge.

As part of a charity fundraising initiative for The Whitechapel Mission, myself and a group of colleagues are going to be tackling the three largest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales in 24 hours.

Now I’ve climbed the Brecon Beacons and did a bit of climbing in Scotland last month and whilst I love it, I am definitely not fit enough to be taking on a challenge of this magnitude right now.

There are lots of training programmes on the internet so my plan is to take inspiration from those and put in my own little bits every so often. As well as cardio and weight training at the gym, I’m also going to throw in a few tidbits of my own such as climbing 6 floors to the office rather than getting the lift.

One thing that training programmes really emphasise is the importance of “practice walks” of 2-6 hour hikes on hilly terrain. Now that’s great, but I have no idea where I am going to find a hilly places in London – wish me luck!

I would love to hear from you guys. Have you done the National 3 Peaks Challenge before? How did you train and what tips would you have for a potato like me?
